Breaking the Chains: Ending Child Labour in Our Communities
By Watoto Salama Foundation
In many parts of the world—and within our own regions—child labour persists as a hidden crisis. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), nearly 138 million children are still involved in child labour globally, with over 50 million children working in hazardous conditions that harm their health and development (International Labour Organization). At Watoto Salama Foundation, we believe every child deserves a childhood—one filled with education, safety, and opportunity.
What Is Child Labour?
Child labour isn’t simply helping at home—it involves work that is dangerous, exploitative, or interferes with schooling, including:
- Domestic servitude or street vending
- Hazardous agricultural, factory, or mining work
- Trafficking or forced labour
- Work that deprives children of mental and physical well-being
Why the Risk Is Greater for Children
Children are uniquely vulnerable because:
- They often work without protection in high-risk sectors
- There is no access to safe schooling or recreation
- Families face economic pressures that push them into labour
- Schools, governments, and communities may lack effective child protection systems
Our Impact at Watoto Salama Foundation
Our intervention is child-centered, community-led, and sustainable. Key initiatives include:
- Community Awareness & Advocacy
Educating families and local leaders about the dangers of child labour - Support for Education

Providing skills training and livelihood support for households - Protection Systems & Safe Reporting
Establishing local mechanisms for children to report abuse and access help
📈 Our Achievements to Date
- Over 500 families reached with anti-child-labour messaging

- 30+ households empowered through sustainable income projects
“Child labour perpetuates poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, population growth, and other social problems.” – Kailash Satyarthi (Education International)
🌍 Why This Work Still Matters
Despite progress—Indonesia and Latin America have seen dramatic reductions—Sub-Saharan Africa continues to carry two‑thirds of the global child labour burden, with millions of children trapped in exploitative work (International Labour Organization). Progress is fragile and easily reversed without continued investment in education, social safety nets, and policy enforcement.
